Twitter basically blew up last night when it was announced that Avril Lavigne was engaged to Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger. Not because they’re engaged so much but mostly because no one even knew that they were even dating! I found these pictures of the couple together in Paris in May that I obviously missed the first time around and the photo agency captioned it ‘Avril Lavigne out with Mystery Man‘. I mean I know he cut his hair but last time I checked Nickelback was way bigger than Avril Lavigne.
And let’s face facts – it’s not like they’re a Canadian power couple like when Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were together, or even Alanis Morrisette and Ryan Reynolds were when they were engaged. This is basically the most annoying refuse to grow up former pop punk princess who is now engaged to the lead singer of the group that no one will ever admit to liking (even though someone must like them since they’re still pretty popular). I mean, it’s like a match made in annoying-ness.
Then there’s the fact that they’ve only been dating 6 months. Avril, at the ripe old age of 27 (holy sh*t she’s 27?!) has already been married and divorced once already – to Sum 41 lead singer Derek Whibley. This will be Chad’s first marriage. Chad is 37 and previously dated someone for 6 years. They met when Chad started working with Avril to co-write one of her songs for her upcoming album. But almost as soon as Avril divorced Whibley she started dating Brody Jenner. And she dated him for a long time. I mean, they only split in January and Avril even tattoo’d his name on her body – which means it’s totally love, right!? Except that now she’s engaged to Chad and she chose to announce that engagement (which happened on August 8th) on Brody Jenner’s 29th birthday. I’m just saying the timing is a little suspect, no?
