This is a tossup for me for my fave moment from last night’s show, but I’m going with Amy Poehler first because she actually made me laugh out loud, really really loud. When the very Ken-doll looking Rob Lowe and the always stunning Sofia Vergara announced the first nominee for the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, the ever hilarious Poehler immediately rose from her seat and took the stage!
At first I thought she might be trying to be funny and claim the prize but no – she stood on stage all pageant like waiting for the other nominees to be announced. Rob Lowe even looked a little taken aback by move but the audience loved it. The rest of the nominees, Melissa McCarthy, Martha Plimpton, Edie Falco, Laura Linney and Tina Fey all joined Poehler onstage and clutched each other’s hands in hilarious anticipation of the winner’s name being announced. As soon as they read Melissa McCarthy’s name the women all fawned all over here and she was presented with a tiara and bouquet of roses.
Here’s the thing – I read one review of this that said that after all the strides that women had taken in being seen as equals that this wasn’t funny blah blah blah. I thought this was the funniest moment of the show because it showed us all how f*cking hilarious these women are. I guarantee you that Poehler and Tina Fey were having coffee one day and decided to shake things up a bit and instead of the same boring old shots they get of the nominees they decided to add a little humour to the show. I for one loved it and think it also cemented the fact that we are lucky to have women this funny currently on television and we need to see more of them.
