Do Not Underestimate Katie Holmes

Things are about to get very messy in the Katie Holmes/Tom Cruise divorce, mostly because Katie Holmes is surprising us all with how much of a backbone she’s showing. Over the course of their marriage the tabloids basically painted Katie as someone who was just happy being Tom’s wife, and was slowly turning into a Scientology convert, but now we know that’s not the case at all.

According to TMZ, Katie is trying to establish residency in New York, claiming they’ve lived there for the past 2 years. The reason for this is because she thinks that the courts in New York will be more apt to grant her sole custody. Tom is said to be fighting this claim and trying to get the proceedings moved to California because joint custody is more common there. But Katie isn’t backing down and in court documents is claiming that her marriage was ‘irretrievably’ broken for at least 6 months prior to filing.

As I said in this post, Katie is playing this situation very, very well, and I have a feeling Tom isn’t very happy about it. Without doing or saying anything Scientology is being painted once again as a cult that has sucked in its members and Katie is being portrayed as nothing but a loving mother who wants to protect her daughter from its evil clutches.

It will be interesting how this plays out because I think it’s pretty obvious that Scientology has a very far reach and everyone is weighing in on them. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch tweeted the other day;

Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people.

Um, ya think? However it’s rare that we find someone with such a huge public profile actually willing to speak out against them. And Murdoch is reportedly very tight with Nicole Kidman. Will be very interesting to see if she has anything to say about the Holmes/Cruise split.  For now though I don’t think Katie needs Nicole, but it will be very interesting if Nicole finally decides to break her silence (although I’m sure there’s a pretty solid ND agreement in place).
