True Blood Recap: Episode 1 – Turn Me Onto The Show Again?

As always your weekly True Blood recap is written by the awesome Rebecca from A Bit Of Momsense!

It’s finally back!! Did you watch? Were you satisfied? Ready for my take?

So first, let me say that season 4 left me ticked off. There were parts throughout the season that I loved
(Eric in the lake? Awesome. The scene where he remembers everything and the spell is broken? Very
engaging). And parts that made me insanely mad (the shower scene as some Viking snow fest?! Book
readers, you know what we expected – this was not it. I was disappointed plus, at the beginning the
whole Jason/Panther thing. GAH).

Also, although Eric spent season 4 with very little clothing on (or wearing Jason’s basketball shorts) I
really missed the Sherriff. You know, the Eric who takes charge, is bad-ass and who speaks in a strong,
husky voice? Either way, between that and the whole ‘I choose no one, I’m so confused, I still love Bill
maybe’ stuff the season wasn’t that satisfying.

It ended with Nan being killed (Bill and Eric teaming up in a way I could get behind) and Russell escaping
(being broken free?), Sookie killing Debbie and Tara lying dead (dying) in Sookie’s arms.

So we pick up season 5 with Eric cleaning up the mess from Nan and her guards (who doesn’t want a
vampire for a housecleaner now?) and he and Bill preparing to get away from the Authority. We re-play
the scene with Debbie and Sookie in Sookie’s house just before the gun goes off.

Bill and Eric sense her fear, but it’s Bill who shows concern. Eric says the class “F— Sookie” because,
obviously he’s angry and hurt by being rejected (remember, when Eric woke from the curse, he
remembered everything – and had a lot to remember). So. This made me made. I call BS. Bill is all
caring and Eric is a jerk. Same old story we’ve been fed before. Fine. I’ll let it pass.

Back to Sookie’s and the scene with her shooting Debbie dead and Debbie shooting Tara dead (?) and
that’s where we left off last year. Lafayette runs down and I really feel his sadness (he’s such a great
actor right?).

But wait. Pam flashes in looking for Eric and is rather interested in the bloody scene before her
(interested in a ‘well well well’ kind of way not a ‘I want to get involved’ kind of way). But it’s Layfayette
that realizes the vampire may be able to do something for Tara – Turn her.

Wait. What?

Tara hates vampires. She’s never pretended otherwise (season 3 when she was kidnapped by one and
made a vampire bride was just one reason for her hate). So the thought of turning her seems pretty
shocking. Just how shocking? Hard to say, with Tara appearing in a lot of promotional posters and
photo shoots, we had to wonder just a wee bit.

But Pam doesn’t ever just say yes. She takes her time and makes it clear Sookie owes her. Yikes. I
wouldn’t want to be in that position but Sookie wants to help her friend.

The whole ‘Walmart outfit’ scene was just classic Pam wasn’t it? So amazing. Sookie and Layfayette

bury Tara and Pam (after Pam gave Tara some blood). There is nothing left to do but wait.

Meanwhile, we last saw Bill and Eric doing some housework and getting ready to run from the authority,
but as Bill heads out the door to help Sookie, he’s silver netted. And instead of using a different door
or FLYING (because YOU CAN FLY remember ERIC?!) Eric runs out the same door Bill did and gets silver
netted too.

Into the back of a car they go and the authority is taking them someone, presumably to meet the true
death. But the VampBros aren’t going to wait for that and they gash the fuel tank and a few seconds
later a huge explosion sends all the car’s occupants into firey mess.

Bill has some shrapnel stuck in him and as Eric comes to help, Bill insists he leaves him but Eric says ‘I
Won’t Leave You!’ in his Sherriff voice and I’m left wondering when they fell in love.

WHAT? Seriously. When did they become the BFF league? However, this awkward friendship is
something I think I might enjoy.

One of the authority vampires kills the other authority vampires and suddenly is doing what I wish I was
doing making out with Eric.

But that’s no biggie. It’s his sister.

Okay, simmer down. This isn’t Game of Thrones. Vampires who are turned by the same maker are
siblings. No real relation. So Godric turned them both and they are all hot for each other. I get that. I
do wish they wouldn’t keep calling each other that between kisses!

Eric’s sister Nora is a part of the Authority, but no one (not even Pam) knows that her and Eric are
siblings. She’s working within factions of the Authority to try and modernize it or something. It’s nearing
day light, so they do to a shipping container to rest. However, before they rest, they kick Bill out of the
container and go. to. town. (That’s a euphemism for have sex).

Come on. It was pretty hot. Then they made it less hot by talking about being siblings again. However,
when Eric walks out and they start yelling at each other and bickering (Eric still had his phone which
started ringing) it was pretty funny (his line was as funny too).

The phone call? Alcide calling to tell Eric that Russell had escaped.

OH NOES.

When it’s safe for them, they go off to meet up with some feel team-new-authority people of Nora’s and
Bill and Eric are told they have to go start a new life, with new identities to protect them all. Was a great
scene but just when they were going to go off into a new life, there’s vampire guts everywhere and the
real Authority has found them. Nora, Eric and Bill are to be taken in.

Sookie and Lafayette meanwhile are waiting for Pam and Tara after dark to see if the turning would
work. They wait and a hand emerges. Pam is up but isn’t sure if Tara is undead (and Pam doesn’t seem

to care either way).

We are left with Sookie digging for her friend and realizing that the transformation didn’t work. She is
crying and Lafayette is crying and Tara’s life is over.

Then Tara jumps out of the ground (and I off my couch) and looks like she’s ready for blood – Sookie’s.

CREDITS

Ok, so this wasn’t all that happened. This recap mostly focused on Eric, Bill, Sookie and Pam. These
scenes were all awesome! But there was a lot going on so here are a few notes about the other stories
(some of which are frankly not as exciting or holding my interest as much).

Alcide invited Sookie to stay with him to keep her safe now that Russell is free. The answer you
were looking for Sookie was ‘yes’ but she says she can’t (remember, he still doesn’t know she
killed his girlfriend)
STEVE EFFING NEWLIN. I loved him and his new gay vampire American stance. It seemed to
come out of left field yes, but Steve is looking pretty saucy and I think he’ll be fun this season.
Jessica and Jason was hot (that scene where she tells Steve that Jason is ‘mine’) then awkward
at her party. Jessica reminds us that she still is young!
Marcus was killed by Alcide but the pack thinks Sam did it and come after him for it. He won’t
sell out Alcide but Luna finally tells Alcide what’s going on. Alcide admits to the pack that he
killed Marcus and they bow to him as their new leader (ooooh interesting!) except a couple –
Marcus’ parents. Who then turn into wolves and eat their son’s dead body. Let’s skip over that
part.
Terry and Arlene. I just want them to be happy and enjoy their life. What is happening now
with Scott Foley and the fires and Terry being angry? This is bugging me.

So what did you think? Were you satisfied? Honestly, I felt it was more of the True Blood I like – campy,

vampy, sexy, fun and a bit scary.

  1. Natalie @Nat_Rea says:

Totally agree with you on the panthers! But Bill, Eric, Jason, Alcide? Hells yea. I will tune in week after week just for them. Tara, I could do with a little less of. Hope this new turn of events doesn’t mean she’s going to be a focus. Blah.
